What is Plurilingmedia?
Plurilingmedia is the name of our project.
Plurilingmedia is the study of media
that is created in different languages.
Media can be books, TV, radio, newspapers and social media,
like Facebook, Instagram, Tik Tok or X.
Plurilingmedia is a big group of people
that come from different countries.
These people are working together
to support media created in regional and minority languages.
Regional and minority languages are not spoken by many people,
but they are still important to people and their communities.
Plurilingmedia is getting funding from the European Union,
from the European Cooperation in Science and Technology,
also called COST.
Funding is the money given to an organization or institution.
This money is given for projects, events, activities and many others.
The European Union is a group of 27 countries in Europe.
Plurilingmedia works with many people
that come from different countries in Europe.
They agreed to work together and help each other.
Plurilingmedia started in October 2024 and will continue until 2028.
Why is Plurilingmedia important?
In Europe there are many small languages
that are at risk of disappearing.
Media can help to save these small languages.
Media can be TV, radio, newspapers and social media,
like Facebook, Instagram, Tik Tok or X.
Media in big languages are stronger than in smaller languages.
These big languages are English, French or Spanish.
New technologies are appearing very fast.
These new technologies are changing how people use media.
New technologies are putting regional
and minority languages in danger.
Local newspapers are closing.
And big online platforms are growing
and make it hard for regional and minority languages to be heard.
Plurilingmedia wants to help media created in these small languages.
The media newspapers in these small languages are important
because they help to:
- share information in people’s own language
- keep minority and regional languages alive
- connect people to their culture and community
- save stories and traditions
- and create local jobs.
What is Plurilingmedia doing?
Plurlingmedia is a big team of researchers,
media creators and policy makers.
Researchers are people who study nature, health, society
and create new knowledge for everyone.
Policy makers are people who make rules and laws.
Researchers, media creators and policy makers share ideas
and decide what to do to improve the creation of media
in regional and minority languages.
What are the topics of Plurilingmedia?
Plurilingmedia studies 4 topics.
Topic 1: Audience and content-creator habits
We study how people use media
and how creators make content.
Topic 2: Legislation and standards
We look at the legislation and standards for minority languages.
Legislation are laws and standards are rules.
Legislation and standards help to protect the languages used in media.
We suggest ways to improve these laws and rules.
Topic 3: Language Vitality
We study how media helps to keep languages alive
and how media supports language learning,
daily use and community life.
Topic 4: Journalism
We look at the challenges that journalists face,
like their training, work conditions and identity.
