Miren Manias Muñoz was given the opportunity to undertake a Short-Term Scientific Mission at Pázmány Péter Catholic University in Budapest through PLURILINGMEDIA. Here are her reflections.
During the STSM at Pázmány Péter Catholic University in Budapest, I focused into the national minorities in Hungary, media regulation and minority-language content provision. In addition, I visited new researchers at Eötvös Loránd University and the Institute for Minority Studies in Budapest with close research interest and who are also members of PLURILINGMEDIA.
Karolina Lendák-Kabók is an Associate Professor at Eötvös Loránd University and belongs to the Department of Minority Studies. She currently serves as WG1 Leader in PLURILINGMEDIA, which delves in the audience and content-creator habits of minority-language media. As member of WG1, I had the chance to join Lendák-Kabók in her office for the WG1 online meeting organised on June 4th. It was useful to show to the rest of WG1 members current networking activities within PLURILINGMEDIA. In that visit I also had the opportunity to meet Lendák-Kabók’s PhD student Nisreen Alsoudi from Jordan, who is investigating the Role of Citizenship Laws in Shaping Jordanian Women’s Identity. I shared some insights about the protection of minorities in the Basque Country and Spain with them, as well as my personal experience regarding language use and identity construction. We had very thought-provoking and inspiring conversations!
Balázs Vizi is a research professor in the Institute for Minority Studies of the Centre for Social Sciences. He also teaches at the National University of Public Service. Currently, he is member of WG2. Vizi has extensive research experience on human and minority rights in international law, European integration of minorities and ethnopolitics. Among others, between 2019-2023, he served a WG1 Leader of ENTAN the European Non-Territorial Autonomy Network Cost Action which was focused on legal and political aspects. It was rewarding to come face to face with him, as he’s joined WG2 recently and would like to be more involved. Vizi showed me around his institute while I met some of his colleagues. We also exchanged several research ideas for GP2, specially related to the second summer school which WG2 will organise in spring 2026.
Lastly, I would also like to mention the desk research work conducted during my stay. Due to unexpiated reasons, I had to slightly adjust my research focus and managed to approach the funding system for minority media in Hungary, the public broadcasting service as well as some of the minorities’ owned media, funded through the “operational budget”.
Overall, the STSM was very positive. I was also able to spread the word about PLURILINGMEDIA. The STSM will contribute to the action’s objectives and deliverables in the form of future research and teaching collaborations related to PLURILINGMEDIA’s field of study, and a potential scientific publication of the findings. I hope to come back in the near future!
