Looking back: PLURILINGMEDIA’s Training School in Aberystwyth

From 15 to 17 September 2025, PLURILINGMEDIA held its first Training School in Aberystwyth, hosted in collaboration with the Canolfan Uwchefrydiau Cymreig a Cheltaidd Prifysgol Cymru/University of Wales Centre for Advanced Welsh and Celtic Studies. Bringing together early-career researchers, students and media practitioners from across Europe, the event focused on journalism in minority languages through a packed programme of lectures, workshops, field visits and networking activities.

Over three days, participants explored both theoretical and practical perspectives – from the history and future of minority language media to the challenges of digital transition, sports coverage and online content for younger audiences. Sessions were led by academics and practitioners including Elin Haf Gruffydd Jones, Jenny Stenberg-Sirén, Orsolya Bukovinszky-Csáki, Craig Willis, Enrique Uribe-Jongbloed, Gwyn Nissen, Iolo Cheung, Guto Rhun and Jakob Volgger.

Highlights included a visit to the Wales Broadcast Archive and an evening discussion with media activist Ned Thomas, followed by a screening of the film Y Sŵn, which depicts the campaign for the Welsh-language TV channel S4C.

The Training School offered not only academic and professional insight, but also space for exchange, reflection and future collaboration. With its mix of formal sessions and informal gatherings – from dinners overlooking the sea to conversations in local pubs – the event provided a memorable first Training School experience.
