Education and Training of Minority Language Journalists: WG4 Policy Workshop in Helsinki

On 2–3 June 2026, members of PLURILINGMEDIA Working Group 4 met at the Swedish School of Social Science at the University of Helsinki for a policy workshop on the education and training of minority language journalists. The two-day event brought together researchers and practitioners to discuss current challenges, exchange experiences from different linguistic contexts and develop recommendations for future policy action.

The workshop combined presentations, group discussions and visits to key media and language policy institutions in Finland. Participants visited Yle, Finland’s public service broadcaster, and Folktinget, where they met Anna Jungner-Nordgren, chair of the Network to Promote Linguistic Diversity (NPLD). These exchanges provided valuable insights into the Finnish approach to minority language media and language policy.

A central focus of the workshop was the development of a policy brief on minority language journalism. Through collaborative sessions, participants identified key objectives, target groups and policy recommendations aimed at strengthening education and training opportunities for journalists working in minority and regional languages. The workshop concluded with discussions on next steps, including the drafting and dissemination of the policy brief.
