The PLURILINGMEDIA policy workshop, held on 27–28 April 2026 at Ollscoil na Gaillimhe (University of Galway), was organised by Working Group 1 and brought together researchers, media practitioners and policymakers to examine how changing consumption habits are reshaping minority language media across Europe. It also offered an opportunity to engage directly with the Irish context.
Discussions focused on multilingual audiences and evolving media practices, combining perspectives from Irish-language media with broader European experiences. Topics included minority language broadcasting, the digital audiences of minority language newspapers and their cross-border relevance, as well as developments in audiovisual content such as subtitling. Particular attention was given to how media organisations are adapting to shifting consumption patterns and multilingual audiences.
The workshop also addressed audience behaviour and policy development, including perspectives from language policy and activism, and the role of multilingual families in shaping media use. It concluded with a session on the policy landscape and a collaborative exercise to develop a policy brief. In the coming weeks, Working Group 1 will continue this work by drafting the policy brief based on the workshop discussions.
