On 5–6 October 2026, PLURILINGMEDIA’s ad hoc committee on artificial intelligence gathered at the University of Malta in Valletta for a two-day workshop. The meeting provided an opportunity to review progress, exchange perspectives and discuss future activities addressing the opportunities and challenges of AI for minority-language media.
The workshop brought together researchers and media professionals to explore recent AI developments affecting minority-language communities across Europe. Through presentations and group discussions, participants identified shared challenges, examined potential opportunities and risks, and worked towards common principles for the responsible use of AI in minority-language media.
Representatives of the Network to Promote Linguistic Diversity (NPLD) and the European Association of Daily Newspapers in Minority and Regional Languages (MIDAS) also joined the discussions to explore common interests and opportunities for collaboration. The programme included an exchange with Bertrand Borg, online editor at the Times of Malta, offering insights from the Maltese media landscape.
Looking ahead, the committee discussed its next steps and plans for future publications. The committee will work on a report expected in early 2027 addressing key AI-related issues across PLURILINGMEDIA’s four working groups.
The workshop was hosted by Claudia Borg at the University of Malta, with support from the Mercator European Research Centre on Multilingualism and Language Learning, particularly Jelske Dijkstra and Odille Reitsma.
